On October 24 1995, Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness was released by The Smashing Pumpkins. Producers Flood (The Joshua Tree, Pretty Hate Machine and many other albums) and Alan Moulder (He worked on Siamese Dream after working for Flood for around 6 years) reunited to assist Billy Corgan with his magnum opus. A double-disc album that produced five singles, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, 1979, Tonight Tonight and 33 , should have had a 6th single, Muzzle , that was set for promotion but due to disputes inside of the band, was never acted upon and 33 was used instead. It’s the “forgotten” single that is probably my favorite from an album of favorites. Muzzle was written by Billy based on how he felt he and this work would be received, mixed with the emotions from a pending divorce. Not tremendously uplifting, but clearly a trigger for his poetry.
Through the Eyes of Ruby is rumored to be a favorite to play for band members and it’s clear they had fun recording it.
So hard to rank my favorites from this album, safe to say it is easily one of my favorite albums of all time.
